The Secrets to Decorating with Wallpaper

The Secrets to Decorating with Wallpaper

Wallpaper has seen a resurgence in interiors lately, with many influencers and homeowners opting for bold and beautiful walls, however the thought of decorating with wallpaper can be overwhelming. Many of us worry about being too bold with our décor choices and are concerned about what to pair bold prints with. Well, be afraid no more! We’ve put together our top tips on how to decorate with wallpaper so that you can create a truly showstopping scheme that is guaranteed to enhance your home.

Choose Easy-to-hang Wide Width Wallpaper

We always advise ordering samples of your favourite wallpaper designs. Often the colours can differ from digital images, so it’s worth ordering a few options and checking you’re happy with the size of the print, colours and the quality. This will also help you plan your colour scheme ahead and will allow you to see what colours will work well with your wallpaper choice. At Voyage Outlet we can also send 1-metre-wide samples to you, which will really help you to effectively visualise your space.

Once you’ve decided on your print, it’s time to order. To work out how much wallpaper to purchase, measure the width of each wall and add the total together (the combined width). Next, measure the height of the walls and multiply the combined width with the height to give you the total square footage that you’ll require wallpaper for.

How to Choose Accent Colours

Decorating with Wallpaper

The base colour of your wallpaper will form the main colour within your room. Working with the 60-30-10 rule, 60% of your room should be the main colour, with 30% a complementary colour and 10% being your accent colour. To create the right balance, choose curtains, cushions and a rug in a tone found within your wallpaper - this is should be a soft, more neutral shade which isn’t too bold. For your accent colour, which should form 10% of your scheme, add some scatter cushions in a bolder hue, again found within your wallpaper to create a perfectly balanced and coordinated scheme.

How to Effectively Clash Prints

How to Effectively Clash Prints

If you’d like to add in a little more boldness with some more prints there are a few rules to follow to make sure that it works. Use different sized prints to ensure there is a difference in scale and choose similar colours that work together. Choose a few different prints in lighter and darker shades to draw the eye in and mix with a few solid colours in your complementary shades to break up lines and shapes. Be careful not to bring in too many prints, which will result in your interior looking a little haphazard. A few things to keep in mind: stripes work well with floral prints, however plaids rarely work with polka dots. It is often a case of trial and error which is why wallpaper samples can be so useful.

Ways to use Wallpaper

You don’t have to wallpaper a whole room. There are many different ways to effectively use wallpaper in the home. Below are a few of our favourite creative ways of using wallpaper:

  • Wallpaper the ceiling
  • Create art by framing wallpaper samples or using up leftovers
  • Create a feature wall
  • Go half and half – this works particularly well in cloakrooms where the whole space could look too busy. Simply pair your wallpaper with panelling along the bottom half of the wall in a harmonious colour to break up the pattern.
  • Decorate the inside of a bookcase
